Do you feel like your Twitter stream is becoming like an echo chamber or perhaps you are suffering from Twitter déjà vu? Perhaps you need to seek out some new people to follow.
I’m not suggesting that you should start deleting anyone – you obviously followed these people for a reason. I’m suggesting that you should add followers to your stream in order to add to your experience of the platform.
How To Find New Twitter Followers
How do you find these people? And how do you know they will fit in to your stream?
There are several sure-fire ways to do it. My preferred route is to browse the people that my followers follow (and those that I follow too).
Anybody worth their salt on Twitter will tell you something useful about themselves in their bio, which should help you with your decision.
Getting the Gist of Lists
Something else that I regularly do is browse the lists that my followers (and, again, the people I follow) have created – and are members of – using the name of the list as a guide.
For example, if I would like to increase my knowledge of blogging, I might browse the lists that Ben has created. Here I find a list called Bloggers which currently has 61 members – of which I am one, which clearly means it has great people in it! – so there are 60 possible connections available to you straight away. In addition Ben is similarly a member of several blogging lists.
Making Connections
These two tips obviously involve some investment of your time but the reward is usually a new connection and a more entertaining and, no doubt, informative Twitter stream.
If you are pushed for time, there are plenty of tools out there that help you to find like-minded tweeps in an instant. However, I feel that searching for the right people to follow is part of the fun of Twitter and social media. Mind you, I have be described as a little unhinged so I guess the route you take is entirely up to you!

Hi Kate,
Great advice. I’ve been following my favorite people’s lists for a while and it works great. I’ve also been searching for keywords in tweets and in the bios and that’s basically how I follow people I haven’t already met online
Hi Jens,
Thanks for the reply. Bios are a great source of information. It’s a shame that so many people don’t use their own to their advantage. Please have a browse around QBT – Ben and the other Guest bloggers have written some really posts on here.
Thanks again
Kate
Good post! I’ve found that going through Twitter lists can be very helpful in identifying interesting new users to follow. What I like to do the most, though, is step back from Twitter and simply look for interesting new blogs, either in blog communities or comment sections of popular posts. Then I see if that blogger is on Twitter, which is almost always the case. If the blog is interesting then the author usually shares cool content on Twitter as well.
You know when I started out, I have to say that I didn’t make it my goal to get followers, although I didn’t turn it down either, but for me having a previous website with thousands of followers, I realized real quick what quality over quantity meant. You can have all the followers, but if they don’t interact with you, what’s the point? I want people that will talk with me, read my posts, share other posts that I share and at times just say hello. I think in the beginning, take the time to build your profile so it looks like a real person and start networking with others that you have like topics with and so on. It takes time, but follow people that you like and read.
